.::Achievements in 2006::.

1. The National Center for Community Rehabilitation provided medical , psychological and rehabilitative services , including wounds dressing and physiotherapy exercises while the psychological services included psychological guidance to the disabled in an effort to integrate into him\her into the surrounding , and eventually to be integrated into the local community as an effected member . Moreover , the psychological assistance included psychological awareness to families of the disabled people .

For and above , the NCCR presented assistive devices such as wheelchairs , crutches , medical mattress and some medical requirements needed for wounds dressing . The NCCR provided awareness services to 1120 physically disabled in all Gaza governorates and their families ranging 8960 by the ad-hoc home care team that includes ( a physician , a nurse , a physiotherapist , a psychologist and a social worker ) .

The teams conducted primary field visits to the disabled at their homes to consider primary files for them and appoint an initial evaluation for their needs . The whole team took apart in setting the needed rehabilitative plans for those disabled in which they could specify terms of care needed and the suitable duration of implementation as well . Also , the teams opened secondary files for selected disabled to get benefit from rehabilitation . The work progress of each case was stated including medical and psychological development . The number of beneficiaries from this project reached 724 children .

The NCCR executed four courses in first aid targeting families of the disabled in the northern area (Bait Lahia – Bait Hanoun ) which are constantly subjected to the Israeli invasions , and in the southern governorate especially Khanyounis whereas 130 got benefited from those courses receiving basics of first aid . The number of woman benefited reached 92 . The courses were held as follows :

  • First Course     :      Khanyounis , 15\1\2006

  • Second Course :      Bait Hanoun , 19\3\2006

  • Third Course   :      Bait Lahia , 22\6\2006

  • Fourth Course :      Khanyounis , 4\9\2006

The participants were delivered first aid kits .

3. The NCCR organized four workshops on the disabled people’s right of electing and nominating . The workshops highlighted the role of the disabled people in the community and the significance of their adherence of their rights ,related to elections . The workshops targeted 150 educated disable : 115 males and 35 females from all Gaza governorates . The project aimed at creating community leadership of the disabled to be capable of training other disabled people in the society , and making positive changes in the disabled people’s rights .

4. The NCCR performed hearing screenings for 4100 kindergarten children ranging 3-5 years old from all Gaza governorates . 230 children were detected as suffering from continuous otitis in the middle ear , and then were transferred to ENL clinics where they live . Moreover , around 50 children were detected as having problems that required to transfer them to Auditory clinics of the NCCR located in Gaza and Khanyounis governorates . It was remarkable that 11.7 % of the kindergarten children were suffering from different types of hearing problems , particularly  otitis. In addition , many awareness  seminars for mothers were held on the reasons behind disability and how to prevent its occurrence . It is worthy to mention that the Auditory clinic provides its services to the remote and marginalizes areas .

5. The NCCR performed 430 normal hearing screenings for people of different ages in all Gaza governorates whereas 124 hearing aids were fitted for who were in need . After providing people with the hearing aids , they were rehabilitated for six months , training mothers on the magnitude of the hearing aid and how to maintain it .

6. 30 wheelchairs were distributed on physically disabled in the northern governorates . It was founding Al-Theqa projects for  the disabled rehabilitation in al Sharja Emirate . The project aimed at easing the everyday life of the physically disabled and completing the process of rehabilitation started at the center .

7. The NCCR held two sign language courses for 48 mothers of deaf children . The course aimed at enabling mothers to communicate with their deaf children at home appropriately instead of approaching random sign language. As s result , there were positive indications of children’s interaction with the surrounding environment taking into account that home is the first environment for the disabled . The courses were given by two deaf members .

Another sign language was conducted for 22 students of private education in universities who are concerned with the deaf people’s issues . The courses were held as follows :

8. Inside and outside the NCCR , educational and rehabilitative services have been extended with simplifying the curriculum to suit the children abilities by using comprehensive education of sign language and learning by lips . In addition to periodical hearing screening and regular ones in which hearing aids were accordingly fitted , while other qualified specialists and teachers were teaching mothers on how to deal with their deaf independents and sharing in organizing educational programs targeting the deaf and befitting their abilities and needs . About other outer services for the deaf , the NCCR organized large enrichment meetings for children who were still hardly hearing by using such hearing aids which provide them with speech language , driving them at more integrating with others . Meanwhile , all deaf schools depend only on sign language and many children with some hearing abilities become also deprived of speech .

9. The NCCR extended other services of language \ speech therapy inside and outside the center as nearly 90 children got benefited of the simplified curriculum to suit them according to primary evaluation for each one at the beginning of the academic year . The NCCR also held other intensive awareness workshops for mothers of those children. Meanwhile , 79 of other children in normal primary schools have separately attended language and speech therapy meetings in terms to previous programs at the beginning . As a result , children became more active with other students and teachers as their psychological stress has been reduced through speech clinics of the center in Gaza and KhanYounis.

10. The NCCR conducted a medical day in a marginalized spot , Al-Mawasi, where services haven't been extended for a long time because there were no community organization ; therefore , a number of doctors and other specialists have shared in 135 medical screenings with attaining the commanded medicines by free with cooperation with some companies.

11. 350 disabled people in Gaza governorates and particularly northern ones  , Betlahia and Bethanon , have delivered food packages consisting of (basic food stuff as protein)and first aids bags( medical gauze , Vaseline , sterilizers and other dressings of bedsores) . The project drove at improving health and psychological case of the beneficiaries who were suffering from serious diseases as bedsores and they hadn't enough money to cover their needs of food and medicine . Furthermore , it helped in alleviating  psychological stress of disabled people and their families as they are not able to attain needs of food and medicine. ..

12. Two courses on foundations of home care for psychological disabled people have been conducted for five days to each by medical care team in Gaza . Many health topics have been discussed in how to avoid bedsores and how to correctly make dressings on such wounds , in addition to learning ways of moving the disabled people and changing bodies to health positions . The courses made benefits for 92 parents who were responsible of taking care of their disabled independents , and particularly for those with hard diseases of bedsores and spasms.  Courses took place in Khan Younis and Gaza on the following dates:

  • First course was held in Gaza on 20\4\2006 with 50 males and females beneficiaries .        

  • Second  course was held in Khan Younis on 10\6\2006 with 42  males and females beneficiaries .        

13. Two other courses on ways about early detection of disability and importance of early intervention of rehabilitation have been conducted in order to enable trainers to detect otitis of Middle ear and hearing for children in early age and to aware them on the importance of early intervention in rehabilitation . Courses targeting 47 female kindergarten teachers in Gaza as the following dates :

  •  First course on 12\3\2006 with 23 beneficiaries .

  • Second course on 10\6\2006 with 24 beneficiaries .

14. The NCCR has also conducted two courses for three days respectively by a specialized Dutch team in developing community leaderships in Gaza with 110 beneficiaries of decision makers , public relations men in ministries , security parties ,political societies and civilian organization as the course were driving at developing personal skills for trainers in order to be real leaders in society management .

15. The center has also offered food and health aids for 136 disabled people with hard personal status by organizations in all Gaza governorates , while tuitions have been covered for other 34 disabled people with had economic circumstances as some organizations offered financial help for those . By the coordination with some organization working in the field , 32 homes have been rehabilitated and particularly for entrances and bathrooms for physical disabled people who use wheelchairs .

16. The NCCR has periodically held ten entertaining and social meetings where the beneficial disabled people of home care programs were conversing and exchanging ideas , information, and knowledge . These are curative meetings presented psychological discharging of all stress as such disabled people with wheelchairs were hardly moving and visiting each others . It is good to say that 329 of physical disabled people of both sexes with different ages and from all Gaza governorates have attended meetings as the NCCR always concerns in holding such these meetings which have vital roles in identifying the disabled people concerns .

17. The center's web page has been updated and renovated in size and design , hoping to make it move effectual .

 18. The NCCR organized a summer camp where 200 of disabled and non disabled got benefited . The camp aimed at integrating the disabled people into the local community . It is worthy to mention that the summer camp witnessed a great deal of recreational , cultural and sporting activities that could meet capabilities and inclinations of the disabled people due to the manifest role of such activities in psychological discharging in the presence of the current critical conditions . A considerable number of non disabled people had a noticeable role in integrating the disabled people since they acknowledge needs and concerns of the disabled people .

19. The NCCR has updated the database of the disabled people in all Gaza Governorates . This database was initially considered by the NCCR in 2003-2004 as a result of the field survey conducted in the whole Gaza Strip . A lot of communications was established with organizations working on rehabilitation , the UNRWA , and some ad-hoc ministers enquiring for lists of the disable people registered for them . All names received were compared with our database to consider new primary files for these who were not available at our database . The new number reached about 1200 disable people , stating their personal information , type of disability , reasons behind disability and their needs . Consequently , the NCCR has become the first source of data in all Gaza Governorates .

20. The NCCR took a part in four crafts exhibitions presenting some works of the disabled themselves . The profits of those exhibitions were allocated for the disabled people's works . The exhibition result in securing income for the disabled , and decreasing the economic and psychological burdens assigned on them . Besides , the exhibitions showed prominent capabilities of the disabled people ,and activated their participation and efficiency in the local community .

21. The NCCR held 19 awareness workshops for mothers in cooperation with 19 kindergartens in all Gaza governorates . The subject matter of such workshops tackled the early detection of ear and hearing problems of children along with the magnitude of early intervention , preventing any hearing complications and  consequently any hearing disability . The workshops targeted around 433 mothers presenting oral lectures and written guides . The workshops were directed by specialists in speedy language therapy , and specialists in Audiology .Noticeably , a large number of mothers kept communicating with the center asking for advice .
